Stewardship Day 2019
1-8 Field Day!
Bring your sneakers (a change of clothes for the water activities might help too!)
on Wednesday and be prepared to have some fun!

There will be four FUN and FANTASTIC  stations that you will be at for 10 minutes each.
*Teachers will be given bracelets to hand out prior to going outside. Each color bracelet
will travel together through the stations and each station will be broken up into two groups (making a total of 8 groups/colors outside at a time). There will also be a corresponding
flag so colors know where they are located and when to move.

Station 1: Sack Relay Race

Station 2: Drip Drip Drench
-Duck duck goose meets water

Station 3: 3 Legged Race

Station 4: Sponge Relay
-Students line up in a straight line behind a bucket of water
-1st person wets a sponge and then passes it over their head to the person behind them
-The goal is to get as much of that water into an empty bucket behind the very last person
in line by only using the sponge

8th-GRADE TRIP
8th graders are selling raffle tickets for some great prizes (Grand Prize is 4 comfy seats at graduation), all money collected goes to their 8th-grade trip.  Ask an 8th grader if you would like to purchase some.  Thank you for your support

STEWARDSHIP DAY PLAN

Whole-School Walking Wednesday. The goal is to have an entirely empty parking lot. Every person who can walk/bike to school is encouraged to do so. Family members are also encouraged to join the walking school bus groups. We will be walking between 6:45 to 7:30 AM. Link to walking routes and meet up times. The regular motorized school buses will still be circulating to collect children who cannot walk, primarily Prek/K students. Teachers & staff will park off of school property at the following sites, the further away the better to prevent overcrowding:
   City Public Works Lot
   Holy Angels
   Hospital Parking Lot
   Park and Ride

Teachers and staff for whom walking is not an option should contact Ms. Cavallo to schedule shuttle transportation from a nearby parking lot.

PICTURES AND REPORTS

ART ON THE SIDEWALKS

BIKE RIDING
It was a beautiful morning to be out riding. These students were photographed at about 10:50 AM on Monday. Some were on the walking path riding multiple loops. Others were on the pavement gaining fundamental cycling skills. All were enjoying the fresh air and the nice bikes. LINK TO 45 PICTURES

TRANSPORTATION CHOICES TO SCHOOL

This school year Team Voyagers have been collecting transportation data from our students. Each morning, when students place their orders for breakfast food, they are also asked how they arrived at school. Here is what the Voyagers learned:

  • Between 12-13% of our students walked/biked year round
  • Bus ridership accounted for transportation of about 60% of our students
  • As the year progressed, more people rode their family vehicles to school and bus ridership declined slightly.
How do we interpret the results?

A. Walking/biking is good for health and the environment. This walk/bike number is not bad considering our car culture and the diverse weather we experience. Nevertheless, because we are one of the few Vermont towns with sidewalks and short distances to school, it would be nice to increase our walk/bike participation rate.

B. Busing is considered a more environmentally friendly way to get students to school in comparison with using family vehicles. We do fairly well in this regard even though we have room to improve. In the future, we hope that if students don't walk or bike, they choose instead to bus to school.

C. We have a smaller percentage of our families driving students to school than many other Vermont schools. This is a finding we can celebrate while still asking families to drive less if possible.

Walking and biking provides students with exercise and tends to set them up well for a productive academic day.
