MAKING APPLESAUCE WITH MOSS AND FICKEN

This year there has been a good crop of apples in the school’s orchard. One classroom group chose to organize a cooking project using a few of those apples.

The students and Ms. Moss went out to the orchard

Ms. Moss taught students how to pick apples without damaging the trees

They cored and sliced the apples

Everyone had a chance to taste the raw apples which were very firm and tart.

Ms. Moss put the sliced apples into a crock pot for hours. The softened apples were then put through a fruit and vegetable mill.

Everyone tasted the tart natural applesauce that resulted from their work.

HISTORY OF THE SACS ORCHARD

For those of you who may be interested in the history of our apple orchard, check out this webpage. It explains how students from five to seven years ago planted the apple and pear trees that are now bearing fruit.

You may want to also check out this Link to short orchard planting video from 2013.

RENAISSANCE - SCIENCE

Ms. Loucy walked students through the scientific learning process with the help of cellophane “fish”. The “fish” appeared to reflect your mood or personality by changing shape depending on some factor, likely hand temperature. Students were asked to change the temperature of their hands by running them under cold water or rubbing their hands together. They could then check to see if the shape of the fish changed depending on that change. They were tasked with coming up with other questions they could answer using the fish.

DISCOVERY

Blue-group Discovery students in Ms. Kutka’s, Lucas’, Murphy’s and Hartman’s groups were photographed engaged in a variety of activities. Ms. Kutka introduced her students to each other in a unique way by playing a game that involved people stepping forward briefly if they had had similar experiences to those mentioned by the teacher (grown up with brothers, liked sports, wore certain types of clothes, experienced certain emotions, etc.). Ms. Lucas worked on math understanding and skills. Ms Murphy had her students get online to use an assessment program. Ms. Hartman taught the students basic music knowledge and skills using a pattern of sounds created with their hands and an empty cup.

ADVENTURERS - FARRELL

Ms. Farrell’s kindergarteners practiced their writing skills on cafeteria trays covered with shaving cream. You can see from their body language that this was a joyful experience. Friday afternoon, September 18th.
