WETLANDS BRIDGE REPLACEMENT PROJECT

On Friday 10-23-2020 facilities maintenance staff members, Mr. Pelkey, Mr. Barratt, and some of the Voyagers replaced a bridge leading to the wetlands.

Bridge replacement location

The new bridge was driven from the school workshop to the wetlands

The new bridge was put aside...

...while the old bridge was removed...

...and carried away.

The new bridge was carried to the waterway...

...and placed over it.

The Voyagers then tried it out.

They liked the non-slip surface.

Then the Voyagers and another team walked the paths in the wetlands.

A LITTLE HISTORY

There is a small waterway between our athletic fields and the wetlands. When our wetlands were opened to the school for use years ago in 2015, there were two access points. Students and teachers could enter a trail with a bridge near the big tree between the soccer fields, or they could enter over a bridge built by HOPE near the southern end of the property. In 2016 some teenagers created a third unauthorized entrance with a riding lawnmower between the two main entrances. It was decided to keep that entrance but clear away the makeshift bridge and replace it with a plywood platform over the spot. This better bridge worked well enough until this year when the wood became rotten and unsafe to use. The Voyagers and Mr. Pelkey facilitated the bridge replacement shown above.

You can learn more about our wetlands at this site.

This picture shows the unauthorized entryway when it was first made.

BUILDING BUG HOTELS
The weather on Friday, October 23rd was beautiful and many people were outside whenever possible. As an example, Ms. Turpen and an Explorers student took a bit of recess time to build bug hotels beneath the maple tree at the entrance to the school. The wind made construction a real challenge.

FOUR SQUARE
This game remains a perennial favorite, especially under the covered picnic space. 10-23-2020
