GOOD CITIZENS CHALLENGE

With Governor Scott’s support, a coalition of statewide partners is seeking to engage young vermonters in four subject areas essential to a responsible citizenry: history, government, news literacy and community service. With the community service component in mind, seven of Mr. Kittell’s students decided to recognize and honor the dedication of our cafeteria workers over the last year. These workers have produced massive volumes of food for students attending school and for those doing remote learning. The students each wrote thank-you-letters and gave pints of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream to each of the workers. One of the students, Makenna Tatro, met with the cafeteria staff to share the letters and the gifts. 2-12-2021

7/8th GRADE SCIENCE CHALLENGE - ROULEAU

All 7th and 8th-grade students are developing basic scientific skills by tackling an insulated cup challenge. The goal is for the students to research, design, and build a cup that keeps water warm with over 20 minutes of exposure to very cold temperatures. The effectiveness of their cups’ designs was compared to that of an uninsulated cup placed outside for 20 minutes. The cup that produced the smallest drop in water temperature at that time was considered the best.

Students had to use the internet to research methods of insulating containers. They were then given materials to build around their small plastic cups. Materials included cardboard, aluminum foil, tape, glue, wood shavings, dry rice, shredded paper, pipe cleaners, plastic bags, and other items. Prototypes were built and tested on Friday, 2-12-2021. Outdoor temperatures were below 10 degrees Fahrenheit. After measuring water temperature drops in the non-insulated and insulated cups, the students could see what did and did not work well. Next week they will rework their designs for a second and final determination of effectiveness. Link to 27 Pictures.

PARENT COMMUNITY COUNCIL

We are holding our first Parent Community Council Meeting Thursday, February 18th at 5:30 pm. We look forward to having our parents that have been with us since Kindergarten, whose children are now in 7th grade join us. We also welcome new families that want to be more involved in our school community and our families that have joined us over the years. Our meeting will be over Zoom. If you would like to join us, please fill in this form and we will send you a zoom invite. The form is just so that we can get you the zoom link without posting it on the website. This first PCC Meeting will focus on

  • Title I funds and how we spent Title I parent engagement funds,

  • Parent Engagement activities this year with a focus on what our families would like to have,

  • and a time for Questions and Conversation.

We look forward to spending some time together, even if it has to be over Zoom.

8TH GRADER BABY PICTURES WANTED

We now have 20 out of 70 students who have submitted baby pictures. We are hoping for more since it is wonderful to see how students have grown as the years have passed by.

It is best if you submit digital copies of your pictures to Mr. Craib at mcraib@maplerun.org. If you need to bring in the original image for scanning, you can give it to your teacher who will pass it on to Mr. Craib. The picture will be scanned as soon as it is received and immediately returned safely to the student.
