 TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 2nd

MESSAGE TO FAMILIES FROM THE PRINCIPAL AND ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL

February 1, 2021

Dear St. Albans City School Families,

Time is just flying this year, we are already in February.  And it looks like February may be bringing us some snow, which students are really enjoying. We doubled the number of snow tubes this year, so that students prek-8th grade can all use them, one at a time. We actually had to create two tubing areas to meet the need. While they can’t all pile onto one sled, the joy on student's faces says that it is still a great deal of fun, even one at a time.

As you know, we are a holiday-free school. We have learned through our training that students do not all have the same experiences with holidays and that they can add stress to families and individuals. By creating a school community where we celebrate together and honor each other without the commercialization of religious holidays, we hope to remove the stress associated with those holidays. We saw this right before the break in December. We had school-wide celebrations in every room, but it was not linked to the holidays and the stress was lower and all students were included.

For this reason, we are again asking that our families support us. February is the month when Valentines and candy are everywhere. While we absolutely want our students to be kind and caring, we would like to leave the cards and candy at home. When we do not bring valentines into school, we do not need to worry about which child got more, which child didn’t bring any,  which child felt left out, etc. That is an additional stress that children and families do not need. We will instead be hosting a school-wide Snow-Bot challenge. We are making the most of the snow we are looking forward to and having a challenge we can all take part in, that does not cost anything - it is just fun and creative.  Look for details and the results in Daily Announcements.

Thank you again for all your support as we navigate this year together,

Joan and Stacie

PICTURES

IMAGINATION 1ST GRADE - BACHAND

It was mid-morning when Ms. Bachand tackled spelling and literacy work with her students. She had an animated and focused group. 2-1-2021. Link to 28 Pictures

HARDY WALKERS

These two amazing students walk between home and school regardless of weather conditions. Less than 10 people walked to school on Monday although 19 walked home. Temperatures were below zero when this photo was taken, 2-1-2021.

FROSTY SNOW TUBING

Temperatures were in the low teens when Ms. Jarvis’s students enjoyed some tubing time. The lack of wind and the sunlight made being outside for PE and recess times workable unlike weather conditions last Friday.

EYEBROWS & GREETERS

Mr. Craib’s frozen eyebrows were observed by Ms. Haberman after he finished putting out the snow tubes at 7:45 am. 2-1-2021

Home school coordinator, Amanda Smullen, and counselor, Kristen Hersey, greeted arriving students on the front steps on this below zero morning. 2-1-2021

8TH GRADER BABY PICTURES WANTED

The yearbook committee would like 8th graders to submit baby pictures for the yearbook. It is best if you submit digital copies of your pictures to Mr. Craib at mcraib@maplerun.org. If you need to bring in the original image for scanning, you can give it to your teacher who will pass it on to Mr. Craib. The picture will be scanned as soon as it is received and immediately returned safely to the student.
