SACS FIRST ANNUAL

SNOWBOT BUILDING EVENT 2021

Show your school spirit and build a snowbot with your team!

SnowBot Expectations

  • Learning communities, you can go out and pick any spot in the fields that you would like (Stay clear of the base of the tubing hill). Once you have chosen an area for your team, please mark it with the stake with your team name on it. Keep the kids building within your class/team “plot” in the field. You can build as many snowbots or decorations as your class would like within that area.

  • You can use ONLY natural decorations that are found in nature.

    • Outside natural materials can be collected during recess times with teachers permission.

  • Get creative and use containers, bins, or cups to make shapes on your SnowBot. The Makerspace will provide some to share, but feel free to bring your own unique containers!

How can your SnowBot be unique?!

***Please send pictures of your time creating to Mitch***

All students must be properly masked.

PICTURES

SNOW BOT CREATIONS STARTED

Students on at least two teams (Voyagers & Explorers) began making snowbots. The Voyagers started across the soccer field and near the wetlands. The Explorers started their work below the 1st gaga pit and the Playground. Both groups discovered that the snow was possible to pack and build with.

Voyagers - Bashaw and Chisholm

The Voyagers headed inside after a productive ½ hour of construction.

Ms. Fenton gathered her group to work on snowbots on the opposite side of the lower soccer field from the Voyagers. They had just started building the bases for their snowbots when these pictures were taken.

NAVIGATORS’ OWL PELLETS - EMMONS

We are learning about owls and how they are a predator in the wild and all the animals that they prey on. The Blue group dissected owl pellets on Monday (2-1-2021) and tried to make a scientific guess based on the pictures of animal bones what kind of animal the owl ate. The children really liked exploring and dissecting the owl pellets along with Miss Tara’s explanation on how an owl pellet is formed.  Link to 10 Pictures.

SNOW TUBING

It was an amazing day to be outside in the snow. Temperatures were quite good and there was no wind to contend with. Snow tubing went on as usual except that the depth of the snow made it harder than normal to climb to the top of the sledding hill. Most of the younger students were thoroughly worn out by their multiple treks up the sides of the slope.

Imagination 1st Grade - Bachand

MISC. SNOW ACTIVITIES

Digging a snow cave

STAFF COVID TESTING

For the third month in a row, staff members from St. Albans City School lined up for covid testing (1-4-2021).  Governor Scott wants to regularly assess the risk of infection among Vermont’s teachers and evaluate the continued safety of in-person instruction. Thus far, very few covid cases have been found in staff across the State.

MESSAGE FROM THE TECH TEAM TO STUDENTS AND FAMILIES

https://www.wevideo.com/view/2036281202

Hello Students and the Adults that support them

A lot of time is spent each week getting chromebooks and resources for chromebooks prepared for you.  How have things been going?  We want to make sure you are using your chromebooks intentionally and in accordance with our Acceptable Use Agreement which states you will:

"Use technology in support of education and research and in support of the educational goals and objectives of St. Albans City School."

In other words, we ask you to use your chromebook for your schoolwork.  At the same time, we also want to support your own learning and creativity.  To do this, the Tech Team has generated a list of SACS-approved websites to utilize during your free time; with the permission of your parent/guardian while at home, and teacher when at school.

Here is a list of Tech Team Approved Websites:

Scratch - learn to program

Google Earth

Tinkercad (email makerspace@maplerun.org for an account) - 3D modeling

Khan Academy

Code.org - more activities to learn programming

Sketchup - also a 3D modeling software.  Can be accessed through your google apps.

https://thekidshouldseethis.com/ - curated videos

https://wonderopolis.org/  -  awesome answer to any question you can think of

Check in with your teachers for your community’s specific list of approved websites.

NEW BOOKS TO CONSIDER READING

Contact Ms. A. Levine or Ms. J. Seymour if you would like to read one of these texas.

In April 1916, Nell Richardson and Alice Burke set out from New York City in a little yellow car, embarking on a bumpy, muddy, unmapped journey ten thousand miles long. They took with them a teeny typewriter, a tiny sewing machine, a wee black kitten, and a message for Americans all across the country: Votes for Women! The women’s suffrage movement was in full swing, and Nell and Alice would not let anything keep them from spreading the word about equal voting rights for women. Braving blizzards, deserts, and naysayers—not to mention a whole lot of tires stuck in the mud—the two courageous friends made their way through the cities and towns of America to further their cause. One hundred years after Nell and Alice set off on their trip, Mara Rockliff revives their spirit in a lively and whimsical picture book, with exuberant illustrations by Hadley Hooper bringing their inspiring historical trek to life.

When a young boy visits his grandfather, their lack of a common language leads to confusion, frustration, and silence. But as they sit down to draw together, something magical happens-with a shared love of art and storytelling, the two form a bond that goes beyond words.

With spare, direct text by Minh LĂȘ and luminous illustrations by Caldecott Medalist Dan Santat, this stirring picture book about reaching across barriers will be cherished for years to come.

Told in lively and powerful verse by debut author Kevin Noble Maillard, Fry Bread is an evocative depiction of a modern Native American family, vibrantly illustrated by Pura Belpre Award winner and Caldecott Honoree Juana Martinez-Neal.  This beautiful picture book has won many awards including the 2020 American Indian Youth Literature Picture Book Honor Winner.
