GOLDEN DOME BOOK AWARD

Some students have spent months reading from a group of 30 books on the Vermont Golden Dome Award list. On Tuesday, May 18th, 11 of those avid readers met for pizza, a guessing game and a chance to pick out their favorite book to take home permanently. They also voted for their favorite books on the list and their votes will be shared for tabulation at the state level. One student read all 30 books, which is an amazing achievement! Link to 12 Pictures.

SPORT TEAM PICTURES

St. Albans City School has had group and individual pictures taken of the softball, baseball and volleyball team athletes. The digital albums of these pictures will be shared with the coaches and the athletic director, Ms. Beck-Bryant. Those adults will pass on a link to the photos for the athletes and their families. There is no charge for the photos.

WETLANDS AND WOODLAND TRAILS

Most of us are familiar with the trail(s) that pass through our wetlands. Recently a new trail through the woodlands next door to the wetlands has begun to be established. The Voyagers students and BFA high school students have been hacking a pathway through the dense growth adjacent to the upper soccer field. Both the wetland and woodland trails need wood chips to make the trail easier to follow and less muddy at this time of year. Woodchipping the trails is in their plans over the next year.

Enter the wetland trail near the big tree in the fields. Just before getting to the first wetland bridge look for a faint right-hand branch in the trail heading North. It winds its way through the woods and eventually exits onto the upper soccer field. Further work needs to be done to widen the trail.

OPEN DOORS - TREASURE HUNTERS

Students in the pictures were Geocaching using GPS coordinates and clues to find a treasure. This one had a sudoku puzzle that revealed a second set of coordinates to another hidden treasure.

WRITING

Ms. Mangis shared a picture of students that work in room A4 showcasing their excellent writing and artwork.

SPORTS THIS WEEK

Please check the online calendar for the most up-to-date schedule.

A NOTE FOR FAMILIES OF STUDENTS PLANNING TO WALK AND BIKE HOME

Lots more kids are walking, biking and boarding home at the end of the school day now that warm weather is here.

It is important for families and students to communicate in advance the plans to do so because it can be very challenging when students are not traveling home as expected.

Families, please contact Ms. Trainer at 802 527-0565 Ext. 3781, Ms. Stevens or Ms. Vaillancourt to provide blanket or short-term permission for students to walk, bike or board home. This way if students are absent on the bus at departure time, there won’t be huge concern for their whereabouts.

BIKE AND SKATEBOARD SAFETY

St. Albans City School welcomes students arriving and leaving school on bikes and skateboards. At the same time, we worry about some riding choices students are making that are unsafe.  Keep these guidelines in mind as you ride to and from school.

  1. We strongly prefer you ride on sidewalks coming to school, not the streets. The only place where you cannot ride on sidewalks is in the business areas of Main Street and Lake Street. People are not expecting bikers and boarders there. Walk your bikes in those business areas.

  2. If you do ride in the streets, then you are legally required to obey all traffic rules.

  • Ride on the right-hand side of the road, not the middle or left sides.

  • Come to a stop at intersections.

  • Signal with your arms which way you plan to go and make sure drivers see you before you move forward.

It is best to assume drivers might not see you. If possible, try to make eye contact with drivers before you move into any crossway or roadway.

We encourage the use of helmets that are actually buckled onto your head. If you need a helmet, talk to Mr. Mitch Craib mcraib@maplerun.org or Officer Cadorette kcadorette@maplerun.org

FREE BIKE HELMETS

Ride your bike or skateboard safely with a helmet.

On Monday, May 24th, a limited number of free helmets will be available to students that need and will use them. There will be a table of helmets set up near the flag pole at the front of the school from 7:20 to 8:00 AM. Officer Cadorette will be there to hand out the helmets and help students adjust them to fit correctly. There are four styles and two sizes available. One is a BMX-style helmet.
