August 23, 2021

Dear St. Albans City School Families –

Welcome back! We start school Wednesday, August 25th. The first day this year is a full day, and because the first day is Wednesday, we will have the early release. Walkers, bikers, and buses will arrive at 7:30 and leave at 1:40. Students that arrive by car will arrive at 7:45 and leave at 1:45 on Wednesday. Arrival times remain the same the rest of the weekdays, and dismissal on Mon, Tues, Thurs, and Friday is 2:40 for walkers, bikers, and buses and 2:45 for car pickups. Our full-day PreK does not offer school on Wednesdays, so their first day will be Thursday, August 26th.

Tuesday, August 24th from 5:00-6:00 we are having an Outdoor Open House. This year students will again enter the school through the outside door linked to their classroom. We hope that our Outdoor Open House will allow families to feel comfortable knowing where their child will be for the year, and to get to meet the teachers they will have. We also have a large tent in the front of the school that will be set up as a Resource Fair. Please stop by the tent and visit the tables. Our bus routes are ready for Wednesday and you can find them in tonight’s announcements, our website, and the Open House Resource Fair.

This year we will also be following the mask guidelines that we followed last year and we also really need your support again in keeping children home when they are sick. Last year we had several cases of COVID in our school, but no spread. We know that we will have cases, and we are having the same strategies in place to avoid spreading the virus. We will also not have anyone in the building that is not an employee, service provider or student. This will minimize exposure for our students and staff, to help keep everyone safe.

In addition, students will again have an assigned station in their classrooms. This is where they will keep their belongings and where they will work and eat their meals. Stations are 3 feet from other student stations. The school will provide all necessary school supplies, families are not being asked to provide these. These supplies are assigned to a child in their personal ‘toolbox’ and not shared. We are asking families to provide a backpack this year and a water bottle for older students. Students will be able to use lockers and cubbies during the day, and these will be emptied each night.  These strategies were all highly successful last year and well received by students and staff. We also had a much smaller lost and found and students reported feeling more comfortable.

We are so excited to have our students and families back with us for another school year. We promise to continue to share the joy and experiences from each day through our Daily Announcements.

We remain a Raider Strong Community. We’ve got this!

Thank you,

Joan and Stacie
