ANNOUNCEMENTS FOR WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 13th

YOUTH RISK BEHAVIOR SURVEY (YRBS) Grades 6-8

Dear Caregivers:

Our school is taking part in the 2021 Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS). This was developed in 1991 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and is sponsored by the Vermont Department of Health and Agency of Education. The YRBS gathers information about health risk behaviors of 6th through 12th-grade students. Schools, communities, and state agencies will use the results of the survey to evaluate programs, plan new programs, and secure future funding. We will administer the survey to our 6th, 7th, and 8th-grade students on October 13, 2021, and October 14, 2021. If you would like to learn more about the survey or see a copy it is available to view here. If you do not want your child to participate in the survey, please complete the opt-out form and return it to Kristen Hersey in the School Counselor’s Office. Copies of the opt-out form were mailed home and are also available to download HERE. Forms must be returned by October 12, 2021.

WALKING WEDNESDAY IS TODAY, OCTOBER 13TH

This is an invitation to join this week’s Walking Wednesday. It still counts if you come by bicycle. The weather should be good and you can enjoy company while walking. We recommend that if you bike that you travel independently.  Even if you don’t want stickers or walking foot trinkets when you arrive at school, it would be helpful if you would check-in at the front entrance. We want to know how many people walk and bike to school every Walking Wednesday. Thank you.

PICTURES AND NEWS

TIME CAPSULE RE-INSTALLATION

Old time capsule (L) New time capsule (R)

Last week the new time capsule was installed by a local mason, Jim Bane of J.B. Stone Specialties, in the wall next to the school’s front entrance. Ms. Wight made an excellent short video explaining our school’s time capsules, old and new. Check it out. Link to 2-minute Video.

Jim installed the new capsule as a gift to the school and said he would have felt odd about charging the school for the 10 minutes of labor it took to complete. Jim said there is a huge demand for brick and stone masons and very few people are interested in the work or entering the profession. He said it is worthwhile and satisfying work.

FLUTE LESSON - KELLY

This group of students received their music books and then were guided through some fundamental instruction on how to use their flutes under the big tent. At first they took their flutes apart and only blew into the lip plate. Once they had mastered making a basic flute sound, the were asked to assemble their flutes and blow properly into it. Attention was paid to posture, finger placement and appropriate sound. It was a busy first flute lesson. Link to 32 Pictures.

NAVIGATORS KINDERGARTEN CHICKEN CARE - LAWYER

Last Thursday and Friday Mr. Rouleau asked my students if they could feed the chickens their breakfast! The kids brought fruit and veggies from the compost, fed them grain and even collected a few eggs! The kids visit the chicken coop almost daily and have made friends with most of them! EXPLORERS LEAF FUN - FENTON

It is the time of year where leaves accumulate around the school. Every year some students gather the leaves and find ways to play with the piles they make.

Ms. Brooks also shared some 5-6 boys’ soccer game pictures she has taken this October. Link to 118 Pictures.

DREAMERS KINDERGARTEN MATH TIME - DUPONT

In the last few school days, Ms. Dupont introduced her students to counting practice using pumpkin seeds and various learning toys. With the pumpkins, she taught students about how they grow and mature. Then, after cutting the top off, she had students extract the seeds for drying and counting. If kids were not helping with seed extraction, they were assigned to create and count with various educational toys. Link to 33 Pictures.
