MARCH MADNESS MIDDLE SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL JAMBOREE

On Saturday April 2, SACS participated in the March Madness Middle School Volleyball Jamboree at Essex HIgh School.  A total of 32 teams participated in the competition.  Teams were from all over the State and were separated into 2 brackets of play (A and B)

In match play, our B bracket team went undefeated winning their bracket with a win over a very good (and tall) team from South Burlington with a match score of 15-13!!

Our A bracket team showed a lot of grit, coming back several times in match play to advance undefeated in their bracket before being knocked out in the Elite 8!  Link to 4 Pictures (same as those below).

Highlighting Unified Arts at SACS!

St Albans City School has an amazing Unified Arts team filled with opportunities for students in all grades to learn and experience physical education, art, music, STEAM, and Health.

We are excited to use the Daily Announcements to highlight Unified Arts activities at our school. These highlights will help you to get to know your Unified Arts teachers in a little more depth, see some of the great activities that are happening daily at our school and hear a little bit about why we feel these activities are such an important and integral component of learning.

So without further ado, let us introduce our Unified Arts health teacher:

Photo taken at Disneyland, CA over the February break.

Hi! My name is Sierra Garcia and I am a health educator at SACS. This is my first year at City School. This year I visit classrooms in 3rd, 6th, 7th and 8th grade on a weekly basis. I enjoy being able to work with so many students throughout my week.

Health is a new class this year which has created many wonderful questions within each of our units because of students' curiosity. My favorite unit to teach students is the body systems unit, which is currently the unit we are learning about in each of my classes now. It is my favorite unit because there are so many systems within our body and they all must work together as a team to keep us functioning. My 3rd graders have had opportunities to use stethoscopes and listen to their heartbeats, 6th graders have taken a closer look at the skeletal system and 7th and 8th graders have researched a system to share with their classmates and to gain a better understanding of each system.

Things you might not know about me:
  • My favorite colors are purple and turquoise.
  • My favorite food is tacos and pizza.
  • I love traveling and trying new foods from the places I go.
  • I love board games; my favorites are Clue and Life.

BOOKS TO EXPLORE IN OUR SCHOOL LIBRARY

Neurodiversity Book Highlights

What is neurodiversity? Neurodiversity describes the idea that people experience and interact with the world around them in many different ways; there is no one "right" way of thinking, learning, and behaving, and differences are not viewed as deficits.” (Baumer, 2021)

Each of the carefully selected titles in this month’s library highlights focus on characters who have neurological variances and differences such as autism, dyslexia, and ADHD. And did you know April is Autism Acceptance Month?  Use these titles to explore themes around neurodiversity with students and to cultivate meaningful classroom discussions.

This collection can be found linked through our library webpage and please reach out to Mrs. Levine at  alevine@maplerun.org if you have any questions on how to access these titles!

A student's positive journey through a learning difference that offers an encouraging example of triumph over difficulty. A must-have ADHD book for kids of all ages.

David gets scolded a lot by his teacher, Mrs. Gorski, for not paying attention in class. He wants to pay attention but it is just so hard when an exciting idea pops into his head. And he usually can't tell that he's making a mistake until after he makes them. But after a particularly big mistake, David comes up with his own plan to tone down his wiggle fidgets.

This is the story of Zane, a zebra with autism, who worries that his differences make him stand out from his peers. With careful guidance from his mother, Zane learns that autism is only one of many qualities that make him special.

Someone has been stealing food from Snowball, the classroom pet bunny! Can Izzy use her superpowers to track down the culprit and save the day?  The Classroom Mystery explores the topic of ADHD with an empowering story and adorable illustrations.
