PICTURES USA PLACED FLAGS ON MILITARY GRAVES IN LOCAL CEMETERIES - CIOFFI, KITTELL, VAUGHN, ROULEAU Team USA worked with the VFW and Legion on Tuesday to place flags on the graves of veterans in our local cemeteries. They wanted to make sure the graves were ready for Memorial Day weekend. The 8th graders took a bus to cemeteries elsewhere in St. Albans and Georgia to place flags. The 7th graders were responsible for placing flags in Mt. Calvary cemetery. Then they worked on preparing piles of old flags for a retirement ceremony to be held on June 14th, 2022. Some brought their own bikes. Most used the school or Local Motion Bike trailer bikes. It took a good chunk of their PE time simply selecting bikes and familiarizing themselves with standard procedures. Then, the students launched off to the bus loop where they zoomed around in the spectacular Tuesday weather. All too quickly, the students had to return the equipment for the next group of students to use. They will become more efficient at using their time for riding as the weeks go by. Link to Pictures. BFA COUNSELORS MET WITH 8TH GRADERS To put 8th grade students at ease, counselors from BFA visited early this week to discuss how things work at Bellows Free Academy St. Albans. They came to reassure students that there will be plenty of opportunities to engage in much more than just academics. There are all kinds of social possibilities in school clubs, on sports teams, in band, orchestra and chorus, in drama and dance, in the tech programs and elsewhere. There will be staff and students at BFA to help guide them towards these experiences. 5-23-2022. TEAM USA GARDENERS - ROULEAU Mr. Rouleau’s 8th-grade students carried out and planted vegetables seedlings started in their classroom. After the plants were well situated, they were watered in and left to grow. Their work will give students produce to harvest in the summer and fall. WALKING WEDNESDAY IS TODAY, May 25th This is the second to last Walking Wednesday of the school year. The last one is on June 8th. For those students who have accumulated 13 foot tags, show them to your teacher to arrange for your metal water bottle to be brought to your classroom.. Your teachers have a list of the people who have been walking regularly and signing in on Walking Wednesdays. Being on that list and your 13 tags is what you need for the bottle. |
OVERVIEW OF ANOTHER UNIFIED ARTS PROGRAM... ART Many students love having art as part of their learning experience here at St. Albans City School. You can see pictures of students doing art and samples of student art at this Link to 102 Photos. You can also hear from students that were interviewed about a range of art topics. Check out their comments in these short videos. Thank you to all 18 students who agreed to be interviewed regardless of whether or not their interview content ended up being used in these videos.
Here is why the school's three art teachers became art teachers: Ms. Megan Martinson I love to create. Teaching art gives me the ability to share my passion with students. Art is a universal language that people of all abilities can practice and understand. Sometimes students think that because they can't draw realistically that they aren't "good at art". Art is so much more than drawing or painting or sculpting. It is the process, the problem-solving, the willingness to try, and the ability to persevere. It is a way to build upon and improve on those transferable skills that they will use throughout their lifetime, no matter what they choose to do when they grow up. Mr. Alex Costantino Hello, I'm Mr. Costantino, or Mr. C. When I'm not here at SACS, I'm making art, mostly painting and making ceramic art on the pottery wheel. I teach art to share my love of art with young people. I want to share my joy of discovery and investigation that comes with tackling artistic problems. Ms. Ellen Montgomery When I was a child my favorite class was art. Each day was filled with paint, clay, pencils, pastels, colors, textures, and patterns. The positive atmosphere made me feel free and safe, and the creative process became an opportunity to express and breathe. The art room was a sacred space where I could explore my ideas and identity. I could ponder life and what I was learning in other classes, or simply escape the pressure of both for a while. The art room energized, inspired, and gave me a sense of purpose. I became an art educator to share the love I have for art with others. |
