ECHO CENTER STEAM INSTRUCTION WITH DISCOVERY AND VOYAGERS - MARRIN & BASHAW

An Echo instructor visited three classrooms on Friday, September 30th. Each classroom visit started with an explanation of a Vermont problem; many amphibians are being killed on our roadways between their mating and spawning areas each year. Next the instructor issued several engineering challenges; students had to figure out how to build roads that would not impede traffic but that would allow amphibians to cross safely either under or over the roadway. Students worked in pairs or threes to construct solution models using a section of plastic roadway, a toy car, a rubber frog, paper clips, straws, clothes pins, tiny plastic dishes, rubber bands, tongue depressors and note cards. Once the building process was over, there was chance for students to share experiences and for everyone to examine real-world solutions engineered around the country and world to create such safe crossings. 9-30-2022

8TH GRADE PE - JARVIS & ANDREWS

Students learned about the importance of reaction time with a game of “Head, shoulders, knees & toes”. Fast reaction time is essential in many sports activities. This activity was followed by games of four square that also require fast reaction times.

OPEN DOORS - TAYLOR

This group of students spent Thursday afternoon picking up trash around the school fields and facilities. Trash can accumulate when trash cans blow over or weekend visitors don’t pick up fully when they depart. Thanks to these students for their service to the school community. 9-29-2022  Link to 7 Pictures.

NATIONAL HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH - BOOKS TO CONSIDER IN THE LIBRARY

Did you know it is National Hispanic Heritage Month? It is celebrated in the U.S. from September 15 to October 15 and recognizes the contributions and influence of Hispanic Americans to the history, culture, and achievements in the United States. Checkout these books in our library today!

With the combination of powerful, spare language and sumptuous, complex imagery characteristic of her work, Yuyi Morales weaves the tale of a fawn making her way through a landscape that is dangerous, beautiful—and full of potential.  A gentle voice urges her onward, to face her fears and challenge the obstacles that seek to hold her back.

With a voice full of calm, contemplative wisdom, readers are invited to listen and observe, to accept themselves—and to dare to shout!

Nine-year-old Betita knows she is a crane. Papi has told her the story, even before her family fled to Los Angeles to seek refuge from cartel wars in Mexico. The Aztecs came from a place called Aztlan, what is now the Southwest US, called the land of the cranes. They left Aztlan to establish their great city in the center of the universe-Tenochtitlan, modern-day Mexico City. It was prophesized that their people would one day return to live among the cranes in their promised land. Papi tells Betita that they are cranes that have come home.

Then one day, Betita's beloved father is arrested by Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) and deported to Mexico. Betita and her pregnant mother are left behind on their own, but soon they too are detained and must learn to survive in a family detention camp outside of Los Angeles. Even in cruel and inhumane conditions, Betita finds heart in her own poetry and in the community she and her mother find in the camp. The voices of her fellow asylum seekers fly above the hatred keeping them caged, but each day threatens to tear them down lower than they ever thought they could be. Will Betita and her family ever be whole again.
