CHAMPLAIN VALLEY WATERSHED INSTRUCTION

Prior to the pandemic there was annual instruction of 4th graders and 7th & 8th graders in watershed health down at the St. Albans Bay Park. This year, the program has been restarted. All 4-6th grade teams sent their 4th grade students to the bay park on Monday, September 19th. Instructors from UVM, St. Albans Museum and other local organizations put together four learning stations and each learning community group (Discovery, Incredibles, Triumph, Voyagers) rotated through them. The students were interested in what they saw and talked about. Due to the rain, students returned to school late morning, rather than after lunch.

LEARNING ABOUT SOIL AND RUNOFF

Four soil samples were set up on a platform (bare and compacted, invasive waterway weed, grassy field, forest floor) and a measured amount of water was poured through each of them. The water that ran off, or dripped through the soil samples, was collected and compared to the other water samples. It became obvious that healthy, vegetated, non-compacted soils did the best at retaining and filtering water. Link to 15 Pictures.

WATERSHED MODEL

Several instructors guided students through the use of model of houses, factories, roads and bridges in a small watershed area. Students then got to add contaminants to the ground, like salt and oil before raining water with a spray bottle onto the model. They got to witness how those soil and water contaminants were washed down into the waterways and the bottom of the watershed, much like they do into lake champlain. Link to 10 Pictures.

ARTWORK RELATED TO THE WATERSHED

After a tour through the map of the Champlain Valley Water shed, students were provide with colored paper and pens to draw images connected with their learning. They learned how water in areas far removed from the lake eventually flow down to Lake Champlain. Car oil, herbicides, and pet waste are just a few water contaminants that reach the lake. NOTE: AGRICULTURE’S EFFECT ON THE WATERSHED.

Due to time constraints, photos were not collected from this rotation. Two farmers came to talk about the impact of farming practices on water health.

HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH - BOOKS TO CONSIDER IN THE LIBRARY

Did you know it is National Hispanic Heritage Month? It is celebrated in the U.S. from September 15 to October 15 and recognizes the contributions and influence of Hispanic Americans to the history, culture, and achievements in the United States. Checkout these books in our library today!

We are resilience. We are hope. We are dreamers.  Yuyi Morales brought her hopes, her passion, her strength, and her stories with her, when she came to the United States in 1994 with her infant son. She left behind nearly everything she owned, but she didn't come empty-handed.

Dreamers is a celebration of making your home with the things you always carry: your resilience, your dreams, your hopes and history. It's the story of finding your way in a new place, of navigating an unfamiliar world and finding the best parts of it. In dark times, it's a promise that you can make better tomorrows.

A celebration of the love between a father and daughter, and of a vibrant immigrant neighborhood, by an award-winning author and illustrator duo.

When Daisy Ramona zooms around her neighborhood with her papi on his motorcycle, she sees the people and places she's always known. She also sees a community that is rapidly changing around her.

But as the sun sets purple-blue-gold behind Daisy Ramona and her papi, she knows that the love she feels will always be there.
