Announcements 10-14-2022

LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear St. Albans City School Families,

This is my 15th year as the Principal of St. Albans City School. It has been an amazing experience and one I have truly enjoyed. Thank you for your support throughout the years. I am writing to inform you that I will be retiring at the end of the 2022-2023 school year. I am letting our school community know early so that there can be a thoughtful process for hiring a new principal. While I will definitely miss the joy I have experienced as the Principal of our school, I am looking forward to having a little less responsibility and a little more time. We still have much of the school year left and I will continue to enjoy supporting our students, staff and families.

Thank you,

Joan Cavallo

Principal St. Albans City School

PICTURES

INVESTIGATORS 1ST GRADE PE - WIGHT

Students enjoyed two activities in Ms. Wights gym on Thursday morning. The first involved strapping on belts with long tails attached with velcro. The goal was to chase each other and try to step on a tail to get it to detach. If that occurred, the person was out and had to wait another turn. The second activity involved keeping a balloon aloft in the air for as long as possible by batting it from below. Link to 23 Pictures.

NAVIGATORS (MS. LAWYER’S CLASSROOM) SINCE THE BEGINNING OF SCHOOL

NAVIGATORS KINDERGARTEN - BAKER

Ms. Baker spent some time working on literacy with Ms. Lawyer’s students on Thursday morning. There was a fun read aloud, some singing and also time for questions.

EXCEPTIONAL PICTURES BOOKS IN OUR LIBRARY

The Red Clover book awards are a list of exceptional picture books created by librarians around the state since 1997.  Each of these texts are in our school library and here you will find resources that go with each book.

Stacey is a little girl who loves words more than anything. She loves reading them, sounding them out, and finding comfort in them when things are hard.

But when her teacher chooses her to compete in the local spelling bee, she isn’t as excited as she thought she’d be. What if she messes up? Or worse, if she can’t bring herself to speak up, like sometimes happens when facing bullies at school?

Stacey will learn that win or lose . . . her words are powerful, and sometimes perseverance is the most important word of all.

From Pura Belpré Award–winning author Margarita Engle comes a lively, rhythmic picture book about a little girl visiting her grandfather who is a pregonero—a singing street vendor in Cuba—and helping him sell his frutas.

When we visit mi abuelo, I help him sell

frutas, singing the names of each fruit

as we walk, our footsteps like drumbeats,

our hands like maracas, shaking…

The little girl loves visiting her grandfather in Cuba and singing his special songs to sell all kinds of fruit: mango, limón, naranja, piña, and more! Even when they’re apart, grandfather and granddaughter can share rhymes between their countries like un abrazo—a hug—made of words carried on letters that soar across the distance like songbirds.
