VISION TESTING BY THE ENOSBURG FALLS LIONS CLUB

The yearly testing of students’s vision at St. Albans City School started on Thursday, December 1st and will run through Friday the 2nd. Classroom groups of students filed upstairs and took turns entering the professional library where three Lions Club members assessed each child’s vision. The instrument used by the technicians, a spot vision screener, looks like a large camera. A student needs to look steadily at the front of the unit for a few seconds for accurate measurements to be taken. The results quickly determine if more elaborate eye measures are needed by a specialist.  The lions club testing process takes about 1/6th of the time as the old eye chart evaluation method used a few years ago.

Link to 13 Pictures of children being tested and waiting patiently in line. Adults were there to entertain them while they waited.

Why do this testing? Up to 12 million students have some form of vision problem which, if detected early, can often lead to correction and cures. The spot testing equipment works on children as young as six months old.

Today we invite you to check out quotes from people across the country about computer science.  We have included a few here, or you can go to the code.org site and find your own favorite.  After reading some quotes, turn and learn with each other--Talk about why you think computer science is important.  Share your ideas by email to drankin@maplerun.org, or gborst@maplerun.org

Quote 1: Salman Khan

Founder, Khan Academy

To prepare humanity for the next 100 years, we need more of our children to learn computer programming skills, regardless of their future profession. Along with reading and writing, the ability to program is going to define what an educated person is.

Transportation to and from the mountain is not included. Yet, for students that will have access to use this pass, we want to make it available.

Any student that would like to have access to a pass and feels they will be able to make use of it, please write a letter of request to Mr. Craib and explain how you are a Safe, Achieving, Caring member of our school community.  Mr. Craib will create the list that goes to Jay Peak. The deadline for letters of request is December 9th

LIBRARY BOOKS

Check out some of the books in our library that honor and celebrate human rights!

In the noisy streets of Dhaka, Bangladesh, another busy morning is beginning as Yasmin rides to work in her father's rattling rickshaw. Yasmin longs to go to school so she can learn to read, but her family needs the money she and her sister earn at the brickyard to help keep the rice bag full and the roof repaired. As she hammers away at bricks day after day, Yasmin dreams of a different life. If she could read, she could be anything she wants to be when she grows up. One night Yasmin has an idea for a secret plan that will bring her one step closer to making her dream a reality. Compassionately told and inspired by contemporary news articles, Yasmin s Hammer offers a fresh perspective on the value of education. Readers will admire Yasmin's persistence in reaching for her goals and the enduring love of her hardworking family in this hopeful story of a bright young girl whose mind is set on changing her future.

In this deeply moving and empowering true story, young readers will trace the life of the Gay Pride Flag, from its beginnings in 1978 with social activist Harvey Milk and designer Gilbert Baker to its spanning of the globe and its role in today's world. Award-winning author Rob Sanders's stirring text, and acclaimed illustrator Steven Salerno's evocative images, combine to tell this remarkable - and undertold - story. A story of love, hope, equality, and pride.

DRAMA OPPORTUNITY

Students in grades 4-8 who are interested in drama, please fill out this form. Rehearsals will begin some time after December Break. Ms. Maher is hoping to hold auditions for specific roles before December break.
