CHICKEN RESCUE - TEAM USA & ROULEAU

With the severe cold weather arriving last week, Mr. Rouleau, put out a call to the staff requesting use of their pet carriers for the school’s chickens. The goal was to transport the chickens home to his basement until the cold weather passed. As is typical, the School community shared generously thereby allowing Mr. Rouleau and his students to rescue the chickens. Check out the pictures below.

FISH UPDATE - ROULEAU  (Feb-1-2023)

This video was taken yesterday (Wednesday).  The alevin have begun the “swim up” stage because their yolk sac is all used up.  They started swimming up to the surface looking for food.  We have begun to feed them 2-3 times a day with fish food.  They have been very active and some of them have even jumped out of the net into the bigger tank.  We have to catch them and put them back in the net because they are too small and can get caught in the filter pump.  We will release them into the bigger tank after February break. Link to 9-second video clip.

FISH UPDATE - ROULEAU  (Jan 27-2023)

This video of the trout was taken on Friday of last week.  If you look closely you can still see the yolk sac on the belly of the alevin.  This is what they are using to grow until the yolk is gone and then they will do something called “swim up”.  You can see in the video the alevin are happy to be laying on the bottom at this time because they are not looking for food. Link to 12-second video clip.

BOOKS TO CONSIDER READING IN THE LIBRARY

The St. Albans City School Library honors Black History Month with a curated booklist of recent works that examine the Black experience. Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in history. These books will honor and highlight powerful stories and can be found in our school library today!

When Nigel looks up at the moon, his future is bright. He imagines himself as…an astronaut, a dancer, a superhero, too!

Among the stars, he twirls. With pride, his chest swells. And his eyes, they glow. Nigel is the most brilliant body in the sky.

But it’s Career Week at school, and Nigel can’t find the courage to share his dreams. It’s easy to whisper them to the moon, but not to his classmates—especially when he already feels out of place.

In this stirring, much-anticipated picture book by presidential inaugural poet and activist Amanda Gorman, anything is possible when our voices join together. As a young girl leads a cast of characters on a musical journey, they learn that they have the power to make changes—big or small—in the world, in their communities, and in most importantly, in themselves.

Meet Kamala Harris, the first woman, first Black person, and first South Asian American to be elected Vice President of the USA.

Little Kamala used to accompany her parents to civil rights marches in California, tied to her sister’s stroller so she wouldn’t get lost. From an early age, she dreamed of becoming a lawyer to help people in need. At university, Kamala felt like she could do anything and everything. She earned a law degree to make sure the most vulnerable were protected by justice. Kamala’s life was full of firsts, including becoming the first woman, Black woman, and South Asian American to be elected Vice President. As Kamala stated to little girls everywhere in her speech—she may be the first but she won’t be the last.

Angelou’s strong words are matched by the bold vision of artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, whose style reveals the powerful emotions and fanciful imaginings of childhood. Together, Angelou’s words and Basquiat’s paintings create a place where every child, indeed every person, may experience their own fearlessness.

This brilliant introduction to poetry and contemporary art features brief biographies of Angelou and Basquiat and an afterword from the editor. A selected bibliography of Angelou’s books and a selected museum listing of Basquiat’s works open the door to further inspiration through the fine arts.
