CROSS COUNTRY SKIING DURING P.E. - JARVIS & ANDREWS

Once again, a representative of the Catamount Ski Association came to St. Albans City School to help  introduce 5-7th graders to cross country skiing. During the Monday class sessions (2-6-2023), student tied on their boots before heading to the outdoor basketball court where bags of skis and poles were waiting for them. Once everyone had gotten their skis connected to their boots,  they moved to a cone-defined area for a short game of game of sharks and minnows. Most students at St. Albans City School have little familiarity with the sport, so there was a fair amount of humor expressed as students moved awkwardly around the field in their game of tag. For the most part, studentd had a good time although it helped when students had gloves and ski pants to make the inevitable falls less chilling. The cross-country ski instruction program continues through February. Link to 33 Pictures from Team Discovery. Link to 17 Pictures from Team Voyagers

BOOKS TO CONSIDER READING IN THE LIBRARY

Curious about Audiobooks at Our School? - Click on this link.

The St. Albans City School Library honors Black History Month with a curated booklist of recent works that examine the Black experience. Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in history. These books will honor and highlight powerful stories and can be found in our school library today!

Meet Mae Jemison, scientist, astronaut and the first ever black woman in space.

When Mae Jemison was a little girl, she dreamed of blasting off into space on a rocket ship. She was so excited as she watched the Apollo Moon landings, but she wondered… why none of the astronauts were women?

Mae loved science and was so bright that she started college at just 16, and was training to be a doctor by the age of 20. She joined the Peace Corps, using her medical knowledge to help people in countries all around the world. Upon returning to the United States, she was accepted into NASA’s astronaut program.

After hard work and training, in 1992 Mae became the first Black woman to travel into space! This inspiring book features stylish and quirky illustrations and extra facts at the back, including a biographical timeline with historical photos and a detailed profile of the groundbreaking astronaut’s life.

Meet Michelle Obama, the iconic first lady, advocate, lawyer, and author.

Young Michelle grew up on the South Side of Chicago in a close-knit family. She loved school, achieving A’s, and worked hard to blaze trails at the universities of Princeton and Harvard. Then, at the beginning of her legal career, she met Barack Obama. As first lady, she used her platform to advocate for women and girls and continues to inspire many with her powerful voice, and best-selling books.
